The Bridgwater Talking Newspaper began in April 2009 and is produced on tape, duplicated and distributed weekly by post by Bridgwater Lions to the blind and partially-sighted with content being taken from the Bridgwater Mercury and Bridgwater Times.
Twelve months later we have 40 listeners and hope for many more. We have great fun and good companionship on Tuesday evening recording each week’s issue and have just passed our 1st Anniversary, not one week missed in the past twelve months.
Our plans are now to go digital and to enable this to happen we have just learnt that we secured a grant which enable it to continue and enhance its service to our local blind and partially- sighted.
We will be advising our listeners of the enhanced service and encouraging them to avail themselves of it. Sound quality will be much better, recordings will be crisper and the use of data sticks will be simpler for the recipients to use. We will provide and set up boom-boxes in the homes of all those who need one, absolutely free of charge.
Anyone who is blind or partially-sighted is invited to join the circulation list. Either phone Steve on 01278-421407 or Richard on 01278-684390, or register online ausing the form below and you will receive the next issue with our compliments. The service is free of charge.
We provide local news, sports updates, postbag items, what’s on, items from around the region, and all the announcements of births, birthdays, anniversaries and deaths, interspersed with some good music and ending with our “and finally” corny joke of the week, and are always open to suggestions of items for inclusion from our listeners.
We expect to undertake a continuing programme of promoting to increase the take up from the Blind and Partially Sighted.
Following recent publicity we have had contact from some new volunteers who are interested in helping us with the weekly readings. If there are any budding readers or editors or other volunteers in the Bridgwater area who would like to help us in any way, we would be pleased to hear from them.
Similarly we would like to secure suitable premises for us to use as a recording studio. Can anyone offer or suggest suitable premises in the Bridgwater area for us to use as a permanent base? We feel this would give everyone a focus and help us become better known in the Town.
PLEASE COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING FORM TO RECEIVE THE NEWSPAPER OR CONTACT TO GET INVOLVED ETC.
